Week 4 post: Journalism Today

I thought both of these articles did a good job of characterizing the new demands that face journalists everyday. As a sports journalist, I couldn't help but identify with many of the things touched on in these articles. The first article went in depth with the phenomenon of trying to be the first to get the lineup out. I've experienced similar feelings while running my own sports blog, www.brotherlylovesports.wordpress.com. I've always strived to try to Tweet out information as quickly as possible when it came to my attention. I feel like the new age of technology has made it imperative that speed become the most important aspect of journalism in place of accuracy. There is plenty of time to be accurate later. Just get something out to the masses now, and get it out first. That is the new mindset of sports journalism.

The second article also touched on the accuracy of sports journalism, looking into the phenomenon of less accurate reporting and more quickly reported works. All of this makes me wonder, is it worth sacrificing accuracy for speed? I think the articles made it clear that we do not know the answer to that yet. We are blindly taking sports journalism down a road that it has never been and we will only know whether or not this is the right path, when we reach our destination.
