Week 6 Blog
The
article about Simmons really didn’t interest me at all. It just read like a
term paper written by a student and was laced with the writer’s own thoughts on
a sports journalist who I have never even heard of. I didn’t particularly like
how he talked about “whiteness”. I believe that race should be left out of the
sports world. If you enjoy watching a sport and are knowledgeable of it then
race shouldn’t even be a thing of consideration.
The article
which covered female sports journalists was much more to my liking. I agreed
with much of what the article stated. Women and underrepresented when it comes
to sports and covering sports. If by some miracle a woman lands a job at a
sports industry as a reporter such as Comcast Sportsnet or ESPN that is a huge
feat in itself. However, the women are never given roles equal to that of their
male counterparts. It makes me go crazy to see women having pointless roles
such as a host on a sports talk show. In these instances the female does not
give barely any opinion on the subjects that are being discussed but rather
throws the questions to her male counterparts. One female that I can think of
who has done the unthinkable is Doris Burke. Despite the fact that many people cannot
stand her as a play-by-play announcer, she is good at what she does and she is
well respected which is next to impossible for a woman to do in the sports
industry. Most females you see in sports are more attractive than they are knowledgeable.
Or at least, that is what we are made to believe since they rarely are allowed
to say anything of sustenance.
As far
as a topic for my term paper, I think that I would like to address the issue of
gender discrimination in sports. It really interests me and I think that I
could do well with it; I just need to narrow it down a bit I think. Let me know
your thoughts.
Kristalyn,
ReplyDeleteAs you mentioned, you need to bring this to a more specific event or game. Can be more specific about what you want to write about?
